Conclusion
“Two forces will drive (globalization’s) return: the rebound of the global economy and China's emergence as a player on the world economic stage.” As stated previously, I disagree with the former. For better or for worse, we are now in an inextricably global economy. As for the latter, this author feels that the point was made that China is on the world stage now, and for the foreseeable future.
“In addition to supranational positioning is the need for an opposing force--an alternative to U.S. brand hegemony”. On this score, the author simply disagrees. America may have pioneered globalization, and consequently been synonymous with it for a generation, but that will fade of itself, as this is now how the game is played, regardless where you are on the planet. More “us or them” thinking.
Chinese products are emerging, as China is emerging. This author, however, would argue that the Chinese brand of China itself is what is most significant today. Lenovo is one of those one in 100 Chinese products that because of what it actually is, it has potential to become a standalone brand in its own right. However, it still has a ways to go before it can stand side-by-side with the likes of Sony, Apple and Dell.
